The man under the stairs
There's a man who lives under my stairs
I hear him from time to time
He's quiet when my family are in
When there are people around, all is fine
But when my mum is out in the garden
and my dad is under his car
When my sister is asleep in her cot
and my brother is out at the park
The man who lives under the stairs
seems to know that they've all gone
he begins to stretch and to move
when he knows I'm the only one
I hear his carefully placed feet
as he tip toes out of his lair
the floor boards creak as I hide and peek
from behind my grandma’s chair
I hear him moving above
there are clicks and taps from the walls
there's a horrible noise as one of my toys
is knocked by the man and falls
the creaking is back on the stairs
It sounds like he's coming back down
I crouch real small, into no space at all
to be sure that he can't get me now
I think I can hear his footsteps
I know he is definitely there
I shiver and shake, and for my own sake
I quietly say the lords prayer
and then there's a significant BANG
it's, mum....he's answered my prayers
I jump from my place, put a smile on my face
as I know the man's back beneath stairs
Mum asks if I'll join her in the garden
where as earlier I politely declined
As the weather is nice, and there's orange with Ice
I took a big chair and reclined
As I sat and sipped juice through a straw
as I lay I began to unwind
I looked at the stairs in our house
and knew it was all in my mind
